St. Thomas’s Secondary School Archive Project

1. What is STAr?
St. Thomas’s School is the oldest school in Sarawak and third oldest school in Malaysia. Established in 1848, the school possesses a 161-year history, which is a part of Sarawak’s heritage. Against this rich historical tapestry, the St. Thomas Archive (STAr) project was initiated.
This STAr Project aims to:
  • archive collections of various media (photographs, magazines, newspapers) associated to St.Thomas’s history
  • raise awareness of the history of the school and Sarawak among the current students and diasporas around the world
  • increase the sense of patriotism of present students to inspire them to aim higher in bothacademic and non-academic fields
  • encourage the use of technology among the current students
  • increase interaction and cooperation between the present students and the Old Boy
2. Why archive?
The history of the school exists predominantly in paper form (hard copies), such as newspaper cuttings, photographs, books, and magazines. However, this form is susceptible to damage due to aging. Furthermore, part of these collections has been lost due to fire which has occurred on three occasions at the school. To ensure that these collections are not lost, there is a need to gather and digitize these collections.

3. How it is done?
The STAr Project attempts to archive the collections by digitising the collections. For example, photographs can be scanned. Documents such as magazines can also be scanned (using Optical Character Recognition (OCR)), and then edited to make sure the content is the same as the original content.
