STAr Web Design Contest


1.
Website Structure, Appearance, and Functionality (15%)
  • The site’s design and layout make it easy to use. Every page is visually well organized.
  • Colors, fonts, and overall layout are used, artistically and consistently across the website and do not interfere with the ability to read the content.
  • There are limited, or no technical problems (e.g. broken links, missing files, etc.).

2.
Website Content (20%)
  •  Website expertly explores the chosen topic, evidenced by depth of information, supporting details and a variety of sources.
  •  All content is accurate and current.
  • Media elements (e.g. movies, photo essays, digital stories) include a concise written synopsis that enhances the portrayal of topic.

3.
Scanned Content (20%)

  • Quality of scanned images is good
  • Scanned text is accurate (editing/ corrections has been completed)
  • Scanned content presented professionally.
4.
Usability (15%)
  •  A consistent navigation in the website
  •  Link and navigation provide flow to meet the website’s goals
  • Clear and explicit links

5.
Writing & Organization (10%)
  • Content is written in English using correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Writing is concise and easy to understand.
  • All content is effectively organized so as to hold the reader’s attention and ease transition between sections.

6.
Originality (10%)
  • Website is creative and original in its approach to presenting the topic.
  • A variety of information sources are used, including primary sources such as interviews, surveys, personal observations, original artwork and multimedia recordings.
  • Written content, and where appropriate, photographs and artwork are clearly the original work of the students.
  • The majority of written content is not paraphrased or copied from outside sources.
  • Website structure, design and style are unique and original.

7.
Innovation (10%)
  •  Innovative and novel ways of presenting the digitized content
  • The site must bring something new to the table, break barriers
  •  Relevant technology is used to present the digitized content
  • Usage of computer skills and different software to produce the website

STAr Web Design Contest for St. Thomas Students [Call for Entries]

The St Thomas’s Archive (STAr) Competition is open to all current St. Thomas Secondary School students who are interested in web design and development. The competition will involve preserving the rich history of the Oldest School in Sarawak, and Third Oldest School in Malaysia.
The contest requires contestants to digitise a collection of documents that are associated with the 163-year old school, and present the documents and information on the Web. This involves scanning, designing and developing the website.

Finalists will present their website to a panel of judges. Judging criteria includes the look and feel of the website, creativity of the design, usability of the functions, innovativeness, appropriateness and the accuracy of the content.

Four current St. Thomas’s Secondary School students per group. Please register at the Principal’s Office, please contact: the Principal or Cikgu Hamden Harbi as well as send us your team members’ names, IC no, Contact No and Email address to st.thomas1848@gmail.com

IMPORTANT DATES
Registration: 13 June, 2011 – 17 June, 2011  (At Principal's Office)
Submission of the website: 23 September, 2011
N.B. Please note, the training of digitising the documents will be held at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, UNIMAS on the 2 July, 2011. All the participants are encouraged to attend the training.

STAr Competition is coming soon..

What is the STAr Competition?
The STAr Competition is open to all students from St Thomas’s. Each team is made up of maximum 4 students.
The students will be asked to archive a collection randomly allocated to them. The digitised content must be presented into form which is accessible on the Web. Among the possible platforms include:
  • Web-sites
  • Blogs
  • Online games or applications
Finalists will also be asked to present the project in person to a panel of judges from the Information and Communications Technology field, as well as from the social science background.
The Website will need to have a good web presence. The Web presence must be of a nature that will attract and engage the visitors to the website.
